KUALA LUMPUR: Costumed performers added colour to the launch of the 11th Malaysia International Travel Mart (MITM) here as it opened its doors to visitors eager to grab deals ahead of the year-end holidays.

The performers from Taiwan, dressed in the colourful costumes of Chinese deities, greeted the crowd at the MidValley Exhibition Centre, accompanied by a lion dance troupe.

MITM organising chairman Jackson Thian said the event was its largest fair yet with 303 booths by 70 exhibitors. Last year, the fair had 212 booths and 56 exhibitors.

He said the fair was also expected to attract at least 70,000 visitors and bring in RM35mil in sales over the weekend.

Besides competitive prices for various holiday packages, visitors stand a chance to win up to RM200,000 in prizes by putting a RM250 down-payment on any of the tours on offer.

“Malaysia is currently the ninth most visited tourist destination in the world. We've reached a high figure in in-bound tourists so perhaps the growth now may be a bit slower,” he said, adding that there was still room for improvement.

Lim said those in the industry played a vital role in spotting issues and improving the quality of tourist service in the country, adding that they should not be complacent.

“As far as the Government is concerned, we are happy with the number of tourist arrivals. As the fifth biggest industry, we believe tour operators are on the right track,” he said.

The fair, organised by the Malaysian Chinese Tourism Association, will be on until tomorrow.
